Vietnam Airlines is set to launch its first-ever direct flight between Hanoi and Milan, Italy, beginning July 1. This historic route marks a significant expansion of the carrier’s European network, eliminating the need for passengers to transit through Germany or France to reach Italy.
New Route to Milan
The airline will operate three weekly flights using its modern Boeing 787 aircraft. A spokesperson confirmed plans to introduce a future direct service from Ho Chi Minh City to Milan after 2025, further strengthening Vietnam-Italy connectivity.
Why Milan?
Milan, northern Italy’s vibrant fashion capital, is famed for its historic architecture and bustling tourism industry. The city attracts millions, especially during the peak summer months of June to August, making it a popular destination for leisure and business travelers alike. Italy is also one of the fastest-growing sources of visitors to Vietnam, with arrivals from Italy rising by 155% in 2024, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.
A Boost for Tourism
The new direct route is expected to increase tourism between the two countries substantially. Negotiations are ongoing for a visa waiver aimed at Vietnamese tour groups, which could simplify travel even further.
Vietnam Airlines currently serves 106 routes, including 36 international destinations, with a fleet of Boeing 787s and Airbus aircraft. The airline plans to launch or resume 15 international routes in 2025 alone.
With Milan’s globally acclaimed fashion weeks, could we soon witness a Vietnamese presence on the runway?
