Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for up to 150 Airbus A321neo aircraft during the Paris Air Show, with 100 firm orders and 50 options. The deal significantly expands the airline’s existing Airbus fleet and supports its ambitious growth strategy across Asia.
Strengthening Airbus Partnership
The new agreement builds on Vietjet’s current fleet of 120 A321neos, demonstrating the airline’s continued confidence in Airbus’ single-aisle product line. This follows last month’s order for 20 additional A330-900 widebodies, further deepening the carrier’s relationship with the European manufacturer.
Driving Affordable Air Travel
Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao emphasized the aircraft’s role in the airline’s success: “These modern, efficient jets have been crucial in making air travel more accessible while supporting economic development and global connectivity.” The A321neo’s superior fuel efficiency aligns with Vietjet’s low-cost business model.
Balanced Fleet Strategy
While expanding its Airbus commitments, Vietjet maintains orders for Boeing 737 Max aircraft, preserving fleet flexibility. The airline’s mixed fleet approach allows optimization across different route networks and market conditions.
Supporting Regional Growth
The massive order positions Vietjet to capitalize on Southeast Asia’s rapidly recovering air travel market. The additional capacity will enable expansion into new international routes while strengthening domestic connectivity within Vietnam’s growing aviation market.
Industry Recovery Signal
Vietjet’s bold fleet expansion represents a vote of confidence in post-pandemic air travel demand. The deal marks one of the largest commitments by an Asian low-cost carrier this year, signaling robust recovery in the regional aviation sector.
Future Development Plans
Chairwoman Thao described the order as “a vital step in Vietjet’s transformation into a multinational aviation group.” The airline aims to leverage the new aircraft to enhance its competitive position against regional rivals while maintaining its reputation for affordable fares.
