ATR Targets 60 Annual Aircraft Output by 2028

by jingji20

ATR, the Franco-Italian turboprop manufacturer, is working closely with suppliers to prepare for a production ramp-up, aiming to build 60 aircraft annually within the next three to four years. The company acknowledges supply chain challenges but remains confident in overcoming bottlenecks to meet rising demand.

Supply Chain Collaboration Key to Growth

Despite delivering only 35 aircraft in 2024—a slight decline from the previous year—ATR is laying the groundwork for increased output. CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude emphasized that 2025 will be a “year of stabilization” before accelerating production. “We are working intensively with suppliers to ensure they can support our future rate increases,” she said. While immediate large-scale expansion is unlikely, suppliers have reportedly aligned with ATR’s long-term targets.

Overcoming Critical Bottlenecks

Landing gear supplier Safran Landing Systems (SLS) and small aerostructures manufacturers remain key concerns. However, Tarnaud Laude noted progress, with critical landing gear parts reduced from four to two after continuous collaboration. “We see improvements, but it requires ongoing effort,” she added. The company is also optimizing its internal production processes to align with higher output goals.

Balancing Ambition and Realism

Marion Smyers, ATR’s new SVP of Operations and Procurement, stressed the need for a measured approach. “We must be ambitious yet realistic,” she said. “Stabilizing current production and strengthening supplier partnerships are essential before scaling up.” ATR’s 20-year forecast predicts 2,100 deliveries by 2044, averaging 105 aircraft per year—a target that hinges on resolving current constraints.

Strong Market Demand Drives Expansion

With no direct Western competitor since De Havilland Canada paused Dash 8-400 production in 2022, ATR dominates the turboprop market. The company secured 56 orders in 2024, maintaining a book-to-bill ratio above one for the fourth straight year. In 2025, it has already logged 30 new orders, pushing its backlog to 150 aircraft. The next available delivery slot for new buyers is now in late 2027.

Long-Term Fleet Planning for Airlines

Chief Commercial Officer Alexis Vidal highlighted the importance of early commitments from airlines. “Convincing carriers to plan multi-year fleet renewals is crucial,” he said. As ATR works toward its production goals, the focus remains on ensuring a reliable supply chain while meeting growing global demand for fuel-efficient regional aircraft.
