China Eastern Airlines is set to revolutionize transpacific travel with its groundbreaking Shanghai-Auckland-Buenos Aires service, scheduled to commence December 2025. This pioneering route will establish the first direct air link between China and Argentina while creating a new southern corridor for transpacific travel.
Strategic Trilateral Connection
The airline will operate the route twice weekly using Boeing 777 aircraft, offering travelers a more efficient alternative to traditional North Atlantic routes. The service capitalizes on New Zealand’s transit visa waiver for Chinese passengers, enabling seamless connections at Auckland Airport – a key feature expected to boost the route’s appeal.
High-Profile Partnership
The agreement was signed June 18 at a ceremony attended by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Shanghai Vice Mayor Zhang Xiaohong. “This route represents a new era of connectivity between Asia and South America,” stated China Eastern Chairman Wang Zhiqing, highlighting the route’s potential to facilitate US$500 million in annual trade.
Operational Advantages
The southern routing offers several benefits:
- 15% shorter distance than North Atlantic alternatives
- Reduced jet lag due to favorable time zones
- Streamlined customs processing in Auckland
- Potential fifth freedom traffic rights between Auckland and Buenos Aires
Market Expansion
This marks China Eastern’s first foray into South America, complementing its recent European network growth. The route strengthens Shanghai’s position as a global aviation hub while supporting China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
Future Growth Potential
Pending regulatory approval, ticket sales will begin in September 2025. Industry analysts predict the route could expand to three weekly flights by 2026, with potential additions of Santiago and São Paulo to China Eastern’s South American network.
