China’s domestically developed AG600 amphibious aircraft has received its production certificate, marking a significant milestone for the world’s largest amphibian. The certification clears the way for mass production of the four-engine aircraft, which boasts a maximum takeoff weight of 60 tons and an impressive 3,900 nautical mile range.
Dual-Role Capabilities
While officially designated for civilian roles including firefighting and disaster relief – with the capacity to drop 12 tons of water – the AG600’s strategic potential has drawn international attention. The U.S. Department of Defense has repeatedly noted in its annual reports that the aircraft could support military logistics, particularly in contested regions like the South China Sea.
Technical Specifications
Powered by four WJ-6 turboprop engines, the AG600 represents China’s growing aerospace manufacturing capabilities. The aircraft’s production comes just two months after receiving type certification, with manufacturing taking place at a facility near Zhuhai Airport, home to China’s premier airshow. Since its maiden flight in December 2017, the program has progressed steadily through China’s aviation certification process.
Operational Flexibility
The AG600’s unique amphibious capabilities enable operations from both conventional runways and water surfaces, making it particularly valuable for maritime search and rescue missions. However, analysts suggest this same flexibility could prove strategically valuable for supporting China’s coast guard operations and island outposts in disputed waters.
International Concerns
Neighboring countries including Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam have expressed concerns about potential “grey zone” applications of the aircraft. The AG600’s ability to rapidly transport personnel and equipment to remote atolls could significantly enhance China’s operational capabilities in regional territorial disputes.
Future Deployment
With production now approved, attention turns to operational deployment timelines. While civilian applications will likely be emphasized initially, the aircraft’s potential to support China’s maritime ambitions ensures it will remain a focus of regional security discussions for years to come.
