Airbus Defence & Space is ramping up production of its A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT+) aircraft to meet growing global demand for the advanced refueling and transport platform. The company aims to increase annual delivery capacity as it transitions from the current A330-200-based MRTT to the new A330-800-derived MRTT+.
Expanding Production for Global Needs
Jean-Brice Dumont, Airbus’s Head of Air Power, confirmed that the first MRTT+ is already in production, with deliveries expected by late 2028. “The demand signal on tankers is very high,” Dumont stated at the Paris Air Show. “Many countries recognize the need for rapid deployment capabilities, especially with the growing focus on Agile Combat Employment strategies.” While Airbus has not disclosed the launch customer, Dumont noted that negotiations are progressing.
NATO Fleet Expansion and New Partnerships
The NATO Multinational MRTT Fleet, currently comprising six member nations, is set to grow further. Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden recently signaled their intent to join the alliance’s pooled tanker initiative, which already operates 10 aircraft. Dumont anticipates additional orders from both new operators and existing customers looking to expand their fleets.
Infrastructure and Capacity Considerations
To accommodate higher production rates, Airbus is evaluating whether its current facilities in Getafe, Spain, can handle the increased workload or if expansion is necessary. The MRTT+ retains the predecessor’s 111-ton fuel capacity while incorporating modernized systems for enhanced performance.
Strategic Shift in Aerial Refueling
The MRTT+ program, launched in July 2024, reflects a broader trend among militaries prioritizing flexible, long-range tanker capabilities. As geopolitical tensions drive demand for rapid force projection, Airbus is positioning itself as a key supplier in the evolving defense aviation market.
