Russia Develops Domestic Engine Support System

by jingji20

United Engine Corporation, Russia’s state-owned aircraft engine manufacturer, is piloting a comprehensive digital platform to manage maintenance and technical support for its entire range of domestically-produced aircraft engines. The system, currently in trial operation, represents a significant step in Russia’s push for technological self-sufficiency in aviation following Western sanctions.

Comprehensive Engine Coverage

The innovative IT platform integrates support for all major Russian aircraft engines, including the PD-14 and PD-8 powerplants for commercial airliners, the TV7-117ST for the Il-114-300 turboprop, and the TVRS-44 Ladoga engine. Rostec, the state technology corporation overseeing the project, confirms successful initial testing across United Engine’s divisions, including design bureaus Aviadvigatel, Klimov, Perm Motors, and Saturn.

Advanced Maintenance Capabilities

The system automates critical maintenance processes while continuously monitoring engine performance parameters in real-time. Alexander Nazarov, Rostec Deputy Director General, revealed plans to expand functionality to include predictive diagnostics that can anticipate potential failures before they occur. Future updates will also incorporate artificial intelligence to forecast spare parts demand and optimize production capacity allocation, significantly reducing aircraft downtime.

Digital Sovereignty Initiative

United Engine is simultaneously developing domestic design software, KOMPAS-Kompozit, in partnership with Russian IT firm ASCON. This parallel project aims to replace foreign computer-aided design tools for creating polymer composite engine components. Vyacheslav Khristolyubov, United Engine’s Digital Transformation Director, emphasized these efforts will ensure “technological sovereignty” in engine manufacturing while accelerating design processes and improving part quality.

Industry-Wide Implementation Strategy

Maxim Ishchenko, United Engine’s Service Director, described the maintenance platform as creating a “unified information space” between the manufacturer and operators. The one-stop-shop system meets international standards for digital maintenance solutions while specifically addressing the needs of Russian-made engines. Implementation across United Engine’s customer base will occur gradually, with full deployment expected within two years.

Strategic Importance

These digital initiatives form part of Russia’s broader import substitution program in aviation technology. As Western sanctions continue limiting access to foreign aerospace systems, Russia is investing heavily in domestic alternatives. The engine support platform represents a critical component in maintaining operational readiness for Russian-made aircraft while reducing dependence on foreign maintenance solutions.
