Between May 16 and September 2, American Airlines plans to operate at least 72,200 flights out of Charlotte, reflecting the airport’s critical role as a major connecting hub. According to the Institute of Transportation Research and Education, Charlotte Douglas ranks as the third busiest connection airport in the U.S., with over 75% of its passengers transferring to another flight.
Despite its relatively modest size, Charlotte Douglas supports a significant number of travelers—nearly 90% of whom fly with American Airlines. The airline’s operations at the airport are supported by a workforce of approximately 15,500 employees based in Charlotte. Over the past week alone, these workers helped manage nearly 3,950 flights.
In an effort to enhance passenger experience, American Airlines introduced a new automated technology designed to help travelers make their connecting flights more easily. The system can identify passengers at risk of missing connections and allows the airline to hold connecting flights briefly, offering a wider grace period for these passengers.
This innovation is particularly important for Charlotte Douglas, where connection times are often tight due to high transfer volumes. As the airport continues to grow, this technology aims to reduce missed connections and improve overall travel reliability for American Airlines customers.
