Republic Airways to Test Beta’s Electric Aircraft

by jingji20

US regional carrier Republic Airways will take delivery of Beta Technologies’ Alia CX300 electric aircraft in Q4 2024, becoming the third operator to evaluate the pre-certification model for potential passenger and cargo operations. The memorandum of understanding enables Republic to conduct route-proving flights while training pilots and maintenance crews ahead of planned commercial deployment.

Electric Aviation Milestone Approaches

Beta Technologies CEO Kyle Clark confirmed the CX300 delivery will support Republic’s operational evaluation across planned route networks. The aircraft, powered by Beta’s proprietary 575hp electric motor currently undergoing FAA Part 33 certification, represents a strategic step toward the company’s goal of achieving full type certification by late 2026. Republic joins Bristow Norway and Air New Zealand as launch customers, with a fourth undisclosed medical operator also preparing to receive aircraft.

Industry Validation Through Demonstration

Clark will personally pilot the CX300 during Paris Air Show demonstrations, showcasing the aircraft’s capabilities to potential buyers. “This reflects our company philosophy that designers and engineers should understand flight operations firsthand,” Clark stated, noting all Beta employees receive complimentary flight training. The demonstration aircraft (N214BT) will later transit to Norway via Germany and Denmark, providing real-world performance data.

Dual-Platform Development Strategy

Beta is concurrently developing the CX300 conventional takeoff aircraft and the Alia A250 eVTOL variant, with 75% components shared between platforms including batteries, motors and fuselage structures. This approach allows the company to address multiple urban and regional air mobility markets while streamlining certification and production processes. The A250 remains on track for late 2027 availability following CX300 certification.

Certification Pathway Progress

The company has initiated FAA Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) flights, a critical step toward airworthiness approval. Beta’s certification strategy focuses on validating the electric propulsion system separately from airframe components, with motor certification expected by year-end. This phased approach aims to mitigate technical risks while meeting aggressive 2026-27 service entry targets for both aircraft variants.

Industry Veteran Involvement

While declining to comment on former Embraer CEO John Slattery’s potential expanded role, Clark acknowledged his value as an early investor and mentor. Slattery’s aviation expertise provides strategic guidance as Beta transitions from technology demonstrator to certified aircraft manufacturer, particularly regarding certification strategies and airline operational requirements.
