Hong Kong Airlines has officially launched daily flights between Hong Kong and Sydney, marking an expansion of its service to one of Australia’s busiest international routes.
The inaugural flight, HX17, arrived at Sydney Airport on Saturday aboard an Airbus A330-300 (registration B-LHL). This new daily service increases seat capacity on the Sydney-Hong Kong route by 20 percent. Sydney ranks as the third busiest international destination for Hong Kong Airlines, after Singapore and Auckland.
This expansion follows last year’s agreement by the Australian Government to increase passenger flight capacity between Australia and Hong Kong from 70 to 84 weekly flights, with no restrictions on cargo services.
Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton highlighted the significance of the expanded bilateral air traffic rights, the first in 19 years. “We thank the Albanese Federal Government for enabling this important agreement, which underscores the strength of our longstanding cultural and economic ties,” Charlton said.
He added that the increased traffic rights offer passengers greater choice and connectivity while generating estimated annual economic benefits of up to $120 million for the local region. “This reinforces aviation’s vital role in driving prosperity across the area.”
The air link between Sydney and Hong Kong dates back to 1949, with over 850,000 passengers traveling the route in the past year.
Hong Kong Airlines currently serves 30 destinations across the Asia-Pacific region and over 100 worldwide. Its president, Jeff Sun, described the Sydney service as a “significant step” in the airline’s evolution from a regional to an international carrier.
“Sydney is a key economic hub and a popular destination for both leisure and business travelers,” Sun said. “The expanded bilateral traffic rights allow us to offer more choices to travelers in both cities, strengthening connectivity.”
Sun emphasized the airline’s commitment to quality service in the competitive Australian market. The Sydney route is operated using the Airbus A330, featuring comfortable business and economy class cabins, attentive in-flight service, and fine dining tailored for long-haul passengers.
While Hong Kong Airlines has seasonal flights to the Gold Coast, Sydney is its first route serving a major Australian capital city airport. The addition brings Sydney Airport’s total international carriers to a record 52.
The Sydney-Hong Kong corridor is also served by Qantas and Cathay Pacific, highlighting its status as a key link between Australia and Asia.
