Western Sydney International (WSI) is rapidly taking shape, with its 3.7km runway recently completed. Built from crushed sandstone, asphalt, and concrete, it can accommodate large aircraft like the A380 and Boeing 747-8.
The modern terminal already features aerobridges and signage for arrivals and departures, though some infrastructure such as road names and ride-share access remain unfinished. Located 44km west of Sydney’s CBD, the airport will open in December 2026, before the delayed Metro rail link arrives.
WSI will be Australia’s first “digital aerodrome,” using over 20 high-resolution cameras monitored remotely by Airservices Australia, eliminating the need for an on-site air traffic control tower. The airport is also preparing for operational tests, including safety drills and crisis simulations.
Several airlines, including Qantas, Jetstar, and Singapore Airlines, have committed to flying to WSI, with discussions ongoing with over 30 others. Initial flights are expected to serve mostly western Sydney locals, easing congestion at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport.
WSI’s 24-hour operation will help overcome Kingsford Smith’s strict curfew and slot limits, encouraging competition and potentially lowering airfares. The airport will initially handle up to 10 million passengers per year on one runway, with plans to expand and become Sydney’s largest international hub in the future.
Transport Minister Catherine King expressed optimism that both Sydney airports will complement each other, making western Sydney a destination in its own right.
